Exclusive: Tony Bennett taps Amy Winehouse, Carrie Underwood for ‘Duets 2′

Amy Winehouse, Josh Groban and Carrie Underwood are among the artists Tony Bennett is recording with for “Duets 2,” a follow-up to his tremendously successful 2006 effort, “Duets.”

That first project celebrated the legendary Bennett’s 80th birthday. Similarly, “Duets 2” will honor the star for his 85th birthday and will come out in September on Columbia. Bennett turns 85 on Aug. 3.

Over the weekend, The New York Post broke the news that Winehouse and Bennett were recording together, but we have the exclusive details about “Duets 2” from Bennett’s manager/son Danny Bennett, whom we saw at the MusiCares tribute to Barbra Streisand on Feb. 11.

The set will also include new songs recorded with k.d. lang and Michael Buble, both of whom appeared on “Duets,” as well as, Danny hopes, Aretha Franklin.

Winehouse attended Bennett’s two London shows this past summer and Danny tells Hitfix that Winehouse took advantage of the meeting to seek Bennett’s counsel. Bennett advised her to take care of herself and her voice.

The album, like “Duets,” will be composed mainly of jazz standards, including “Body & Soul,” written in the ‘30s and recorded by the likes of Coleman Hawkins and Billie Holiday, as well as “Stranger in Paradise,” which Bennett first recorded in 1955.

Carrie Underwood Breaks the 12 Million Albums (Sold) Threshold

It has been a pretty good year for Carrie Underwood. New album. New singles. New husband. She’s not being burdened as much with new awards this year (even though she certainly is being nominated for enough of
them), but she still seems to be doing just fine when it comes to selling albums — which will no doubt lead to new gold and platinum certifications soon. And even though she doesn’t have a Christmas album out (yet), her music must be on someone’s Christmas list, because all three of her albums combined this week to sell over 30,000 copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan and “Idol Chatter.” And that puts her over the 12 million threshold, lifting her above the mark by 22,000.

Three albums. Twelve million copies sold. And that is just in the United States.

Of all the American Idol alumni, Underwood, possibly due to her appearances at several awards shows in the past couple weeks, saw a bump in her album sales. According to Nielsen Soundscan, her latest release, “Play On,” sold 18,000 copies this past week. It placed at #66 on the Billboard 200.

Underwood’s first album, “Some Hearts,” re-entered the Billboard 200 at #192, selling 7,000 copies. To date, “Some Hearts” is the biggest selling album by an American Idol alum.

Her sophomore offering, “Carnival Ride,” sold an additional 5,000 copies but didn’t place.

And since Underwood continues to appear on television and get nominated for awards, there is every reason to believe that her album sales will continue to move at a steady pace. The day after she received one of the five 2010 Artist Of The Year awards presented by CMT (Country Music Television), the Season 4 winner of American Idolwas nominated for a Grammy. Her song, “Temporary Home,” garnered her a nomination for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. If she wins, it will be her fourth straight Grammy win in the same category (and her fifth Grammy win altogether).
